Penalties

Have you noticed that at the end of every crime report on TV here be it bank robbery or corruption the reporter never fails to mention the sentence (2/5/10 years in jail)the perpetrator COULD face in the unlikely event of them being brought to justice. Why do they do this? Puzzled

Brno - Vienna Highway

Stand in Czech prime minister Jan Fischer visited Vienna earlier in week to discuss among other things the controversial(in Austria at least) Temelin nuclear power station and the on-going saga of connecting Brno ( and therefore the rest of the Czech Republic) to Vienna by motorway.

Smoke on!

I just read that the Czech parliament is passing a bill on smoking in public places.

It states that the final decision on whether smoking is allowed or not in a particular pub or restaurant will be down to ................. the owner Sad

I believe this solution is unique in the EU . It'll be interesting to see what happens but as a non-smoker I'm not holding my breath, or maybe I am Sad(

Klaus signs Lisbon Treaty shock!

I heard on the news that President Klaus is on a visit to Moravia this week.

Yesterday he visited Brno, which I think included his book signing ( surely some charge of using public money for private business there isn't there?).

Anyway some Brno students asked Klaus for his autograph, Klaus willingly obliged beaming as he signed, the students then revealed what he had in fact signed a copy of the Lisbon Treaty, which Klaus has promised never to sign, copied from the Internet! Who says there's no fun left in politics Smile Eggs? yesterday's news!

Elections

An English friend of mine living near Tisnov told me that he had registered to vote in the elections for the European Parliament which take place 5th/6th June.
Apparently although EU citizens can vote in any member state they wish. The y can't vote of course in the national elections of that country unless they are a citizen.

Has anyone else registered to do this? What documentation did you need to provide? Who are you gonna' vote for? Smile

The only candidate I recognise is the former boss of TV Nova who allegedly can't be jailed for various offences while a member of the EP!

Seatbelts

Any expat drivers been stopped and fined in CR for not wearing a seat belt? How did you feel? Heard some Czech guys on the radio this morning moaning as they had been caught out and it cost them 1,000Kc. What struck me was they didn't seem to think what the police were doing was a "good thing" like trying to save their lives or something ( see TV Nova news any night of the week).

Clearly they didn't have a Czech Jimmy Saville equivalent in the 70s to batter the message into their brains! I think it's an automatic thing for most "westerners" isn't? Though not here apparently.

I just remembered a few years ago in Georgia (the country not the US state)I went to "belt up" in a taxi which had clearly seen a few accidents in its time. My guide quickly told me not to do it as wearing a seatbelt was seen as a bad reflection on the skills of the driver!

Roundabouts

In the UK when turning right at a roundabout I was taught to approach the roundabout signaling right. Here (and due to driving on the wrong side of the road its the reverse case) if turning left I have been told not to signal until on the roundabout and about to turn.

Does anyone know the correct way to signal here at a roundabout??? I am confused.

Traffic Accidents

Heard about a lot of accidents on the radio this morning. Wagons full of pigs turning over on D1, six car pile up on the Brno "inner ring road" Has anyone had first hand experience of RTAs large or small in Brno or elsewhere in the CR?

Car Windows

I see quite a few cars around Brno these days with dark front-side windows i.e. the driver can see out (presumably!)but no one can see in. I seem to remember when this type of glass first became popular the police cracking down on its use.

As well as the obvious things like no one being able to see if the driver is using his/her mobile,is/isn't using his/her seatbelt it can also be tricky in situations where other drivers need to see each other.

For example I saw a near miss in Brno a few days ago when traffic was merging from several directions into one lane ( a "zip" as I think the locals call it). There was no clear priority and the system was reliant on head/hand signals from the drivers. Fine until a BMW SUV came on the scene nobody could see the driver and surprisingly the driver of said vehicle was reluctant to take the initiative (new owner?) Result mini-gridlock!

So, what is the law in CR regarding dark windows for driver and front passenger? Anybody know?
