Indian Cukrovi!

How about this for a win win combination. Next Wednesday from 4pm to 6pm there will be a world cookery workshop in the multicultural centre on Trida Kpt Jarose www.celsuz.cz the theme of which will be "Healthy Christmas Cookies inspired by Indian Cuisine" Wow, what's not to like?

If you don't already know "Cukrovi" are the main Christmas sweet in this part of the world. They come in a large variety of shapes and sizes and Czech ladies of all ages will take great pride in telling you how many types they baked this year. The main ingredients are sugar and butter so what healthy indian inspired ones will be like I really don't know, sounds like good fun though Big smile

Cooking

Czech/English through cooking. The www.happycatering.cz company runs cookery courses most Saturdays at the Hotel Rustical in Brno. Each week has a different theme coming up for example are Sushi day, Arabic food day, and various aspects of Czech cooking. The courses are hands on and there is a multi lingual environment. Prices included equipment and ingredients. Sounds like fun Big smile

Hard Times

According to this article language schools in the CR are starting to feel the effects of the economic crisis with companies cutting back on training etc.

Do and EFL teachers have experience of this in Brno? Maybe it won't be clear until the new school year, perhaps people will have to pay for their own training more.

Bite Size

Loads of bite size Czech lessons like this one from the archives of Radio Prague.

Incidentally,I don't know why everybody thinks song lyrics are a great way of learning a language. Great fun no doubt but often they don't bear much relation to the way we really speak.

No excuse now Sad

You Ox!

This posting is dedicated to one of Brno ExPats most loyal and regular posters. If you've ever wondered where "tyvole"'s name comes from this informative article explains all.

The only point I would disgagree with is the point about the use of "tyvole" by females. In my experience it is commonly used by teenage girls to refer to their close friends.

Once again I can't recommend highly enough the Radio Prague site and programmes for all interested in Czech culture and language.

check your Czech

I read an article in Metro last week about non EU foreigners having to take a Czech language test if they wish to remain in the country on a long term basis. I decided to check out the info on the Ministry of Education website and it really is very interesting including a sample test. Try it!

Czech TV

Are there any programmes on Czech TV (inc Nova and Prima) that expats find they are subconciously picking up Czech from ? I ask this because I always find that I make the most effort to understand something I'm genuinely interested in so I learn a lot of new words and phrases from consumer programmes like "Cerny Ovce" ( Black Sheep)or "Obcanske Judo" (Citizens Judo) I can watch "Posta pro Tebe" and I haven't seen this format on TV in the UK but I'm afraid the Czech serials "Ulice", "VKV" and many others are not my cup of tea and I probably wouldn't watch the UK equivalent.
