Apparently contact lenses and sugar cubes/lumps are both Czech(oslovak) inventions. Does anyone have more details? Or does anybody know of any other Czech(oslovak) inventions/discoveries? Appar ently, the owner of one of the town's sugar mills devised the sugar cube after his wife hurt her hand using a sugar chopping tool to cut up a large block of sugar. At the time sugar was sold in large loaves and you needed a special chopper at home to cut them up.
The mill owner played around with some scrap strips of brass at the mill until he came up with a neat and tidy grid, not unlike an ice cube tray, and decided to package sugar that way instead. Needless to say it was a hit.
Dačice has a small chateau that serves as a museum to the town's historical significance in the sugar industry. It's interesting as a day trip from Telč, and you'll come away knowing more about sugar than you ever wanted to.
Otto Wichterle was a Czech chemist and inventor, best known for his invention of modern contact lenses.
